Local SEO Perth
Local SEO Perth businesses rely on is about one thing: showing up in the Google Maps 3-pack when someone nearby searches for what you sell. This guide explains how Maps ranking works, which suburbs to target first, and what it costs, typically $800–$1,500 a month for a single-location trade.
- Month-to-month. No lock-in contracts
- Plain-English reporting tied to leads, not vanity metrics
- Perth-focused: we know the local search landscape

What is local SEO and how does it work in Perth?
Local SEO is the work of getting your business shown for searches with local intent, such as “electrician Joondalup” or “dentist near me”. It covers your Google Business Profile, reviews, business listings and location pages. For most Perth trades and service businesses, it’s the fastest SEO channel to turn into phone calls.
When someone searches with local intent, Google usually shows a map with three businesses, called the 3-pack, above the normal results. Those three listings get the calls, direction requests and website clicks before anyone scrolls. Below them sit the standard organic results, where your website’s suburb and service pages compete.
Perth makes local SEO more important than in most cities. The metro area stretches over 120 kilometres from Two Rocks to Mandurah, so “near me” results vary a lot depending on where the searcher is standing. A plumber who ranks first in Osborne Park may not appear at all in Rockingham. That’s why suburb targeting matters more here than in denser cities.
How does the Google Maps 3-pack decide who ranks?
Google says local results are based mainly on three factors: relevance, distance and prominence (Google Business Profile Help). You can influence relevance and prominence directly. Distance, how far your verified address is from the searcher, is largely out of your hands.
| Factor | What it means | Can you control it? |
|---|---|---|
| Relevance | How well your profile matches the search | Yes: categories, services, description, website content |
| Distance | How far you are from the searcher or the suburb searched | Barely: only by where your business is verified |
| Prominence | How well known and trusted you are | Yes: reviews, citations, links, local mentions |
Relevance starts with your primary category. If you’re a “Plumber” but chose “Contractor”, you’re handicapped before anything else counts. Add every service you offer and make sure your website has a page for each one.
Prominence is earned over time. Review count, rating and recency matter, as do consistent listings and links from local sources like suburb business groups, sponsorships and Perth news sites. Google notes that a business’s position in web results also counts towards prominence, so your website still matters.
Distance is the factor people try to cheat, with virtual offices or fake addresses. Don’t. Google suspends listings for it, and a suspension costs far more than the rankings were worth.
Which Perth suburbs should you target?
Target the suburbs closest to your verified address first, then expand outwards by driving radius. Maps rankings weaken with distance from where your business is verified, so you’ll win nearby suburbs faster and cheaper. Spreading effort evenly across all of Perth usually means ranking nowhere.
Here’s the framework we use to prioritise suburbs:
- Inner ring (0–8 km): Suburbs you can win with profile, review and citation work alone. Lock these in first.
- Middle ring (8–20 km): Suburbs where you’ll need suburb pages, local links and more reviews mentioning those areas.
- Outer ring (20 km+): Suburbs where the 3-pack is hard to reach without a second verified location. Target these mainly through organic suburb pages and Google Ads.
- Filter by value: Within each ring, rank suburbs by job value and search demand. Ellenbrook and Baldivis have lots of new homes, so demand looks different from established suburbs like Nedlands or Mount Lawley.
A worked example: a plumber in Osborne Park
Say a plumber is verified in Osborne Park and wants work in Scarborough, Joondalup and Midland. This is how we’d plan it. It’s an illustration of the method, not a client result.
| Suburb | Approx. drive from Osborne Park | Ring | Likely approach |
|---|---|---|---|
| Scarborough | ~10 km | Middle | Suburb page, reviews from local jobs, local links. Realistic 3-pack target. |
| Joondalup | ~22 km | Outer | Organic suburb page plus Google Ads. Maps is a long-term goal. |
| Midland | ~22 km | Outer | Organic suburb page plus Google Ads. Maps is a long-term goal. |
The plumber would first make sure Osborne Park, Innaloo, Stirling and Tuart Hill are solid, then move to Scarborough. Joondalup and Midland would run on Google Ads and organic pages until the business has enough prominence to compete there, or opens a second genuine location.
What about service-area businesses?
Service-area businesses, like mobile trades with no shopfront, can hide their address in Google Business Profile and list the suburbs they serve. Listing a suburb doesn’t make you rank there, though. Google still anchors your listing to your verified address, so the same ring approach applies.
Is it worth listing 40 suburbs? Not really. List the areas you genuinely serve, and spend your effort on the ones you can win.
Local SEO checklist for Perth businesses
This checklist covers the 12 items that do most of the work in local SEO. If you tick all 12, you’re ahead of most Perth competitors. If you’re missing several, that’s usually where your rankings are going.

Which Australian citations actually matter?
A handful of Australian directories and platforms matter: True Local, Yellow Pages, Hotfrog, StartLocal, Bing Places and Apple Business Connect, plus directories for your industry. Consistency across these matters more than volume. Hundreds of low-quality directory listings add little and can create inconsistent data you’ll later have to clean up.
Worth doing:
- Bing Places: Feeds Bing search and some AI assistants that use Bing results.
- Apple Business Connect: Controls how you appear in Apple Maps, which iPhone users see by default.
- True Local, Yellow Pages, Hotfrog, StartLocal: Established Australian directories that often rank for local searches themselves.
- Industry directories: Master Builders WA, HIA, Master Plumbers, health practitioner directories and similar. These carry relevance a general directory can’t.
Skip: Overseas directories, “submit to 500 sites” packages, and directories with no real visitors. They rarely help, and old listings with outdated phone numbers are hard to remove later.
How do you track local SEO results?
Track calls, enquiries and direction requests, not average rankings. Google Business Profile’s Performance view shows calls, website clicks and direction requests from your listing. Pair it with call tracking and Google Search Console, and you’ll know which suburbs and services produce work.
- Business Profile Performance: Calls, messages, direction requests and the search terms people used to find you.
- Call tracking: Shows which calls came from your profile versus your website or ads.
- Google Search Console: Shows which suburb and service pages earn clicks from normal search results.
Why ignore the average rank number many tools report? Because Maps rankings change from street to street. An “average position of 4.2” blends suburbs you dominate with suburbs you’ll never win, so it hides what’s actually happening. A grid view by suburb is more honest, and enquiries are the real test.
How much does local SEO cost in Perth?
In the Perth market, local SEO typically costs $800–$1,500 a month for a single-location, low-competition trade. Competitive local or multi-service businesses usually pay $1,500–$3,000, and legal, medical or multi-location businesses $3,000–$6,000 or more. These are typical ranges, not guarantees.
| Scope | Typical monthly |
|---|---|
| Single location, low-competition trade | $800–$1,500 |
| Competitive local or multi-service business | $1,500–$3,000 |
| Legal, finance, medical or multi-location | $3,000–$6,000+ |
What drives the price is competition in your suburbs, the number of services and locations, and how much content and link work is needed. Expect early movement in 6–12 weeks and meaningful lead growth in 3–6 months. If you need calls sooner, Google Ads can cover the gap while local SEO builds. FAQ
Local SEO Perth: common questions
What is the 80/20 rule in SEO?
It means roughly 20% of the work produces 80% of the results. In local SEO that 20% is usually your Google Business Profile categories, a steady flow of genuine reviews, and consistent business details. Get those right before spending on anything else.
Is it worth hiring an SEO agency?
It's worth it if the agency targets searches that produce calls and reports on enquiries, not just rankings. Many Perth owners can handle the basics themselves using the checklist on this page. Hire help when you're competing in busy suburbs or simply don't have the time.
How long does local SEO take?
Fixes to your Google Business Profile can show movement within 6–12 weeks. Meaningful lead growth usually takes 3–6 months, and competitive suburbs or industries can take 6–12 months. Suburbs close to your address move first.
Do I need a website for local SEO?
You can appear in Google Maps with only a Business Profile, but a website helps a lot. Google uses your site to confirm relevance, and suburb and service pages let you rank in normal results too. A simple, fast site with clear service pages is enough to start.
How do I get into the Google Maps 3-pack in Perth?
Google ranks local results on relevance, distance and prominence. You can't change distance, so focus on the right categories and services for relevance, and reviews, citations and local links for prominence. Start with the suburbs nearest your verified address.
I don't have a shopfront. Can I still rank locally?
Yes. Service-area businesses such as mobile trades can hide their address and list the suburbs they serve. Your verified location still anchors your rankings, so you'll rank most easily near it and work outwards from there.
Can I pay Google to rank higher in Maps?
Not organically. Google states you can't pay for a better local ranking. You can run Google Ads with location assets, which show as sponsored results in Maps, but that's separate from the free 3-pack listings.
